Why? That was the most recent contest in which race might have played a significant factor in the outcome of a statewide election. Democrat Harold Ford, an African-American Congressman, narrowly lost the Senate race to Bob Corker, a white Republican.

McConnell releases internal poll showing wider lead

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign pollster says the four-term senator has a 17-point lead over Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford.

That would be a five-point increase from the campaign’s last internal poll taken earlier this summer.

McConnell’s campaign released the latest internal polling memo Wednesday, which also shows that 52 percent of the 900 respondents had a positive view of McConnell compared to 33 percent negative rating. And it showed that Lunsford had a favorable rating of 30 percent compared to 36% of respondents who reported having a negative impression of him.

The poll, conducted by Jan R. van Lohuizen of Voter/Consumer Research of Washington, has a margin of error of 3.3. percent, according to the memo, which you can view here.

“The political environment continues to be challenging: 28% feel the state is going in the right direction while 53% fell it has gotten off on the wrong track,” van Lohuizen wrote. “However, it looks like we have been making the better argument on issues. For instance, if you look at people who say gas prices and energy costs are their top concern, we lead by 17%.”

McConnell’s campaign has spent the summer running ads hammering on the issue of gas prices and the need for drilling while trying to blame Lunsford for supporting high prices when he backed an automatic state gas increase while serving as a governor’s aide 28 years ago.

Lunsford’s campaign spokesman Cary Stemle acheter cialis predicted that McConnell will be perceived to be losing support when future polls show the race tighten.
